Bits of speech floated to Signas around the door, presenting themselves apart
from the general murmuring. "... no need for any more commanders.." ...
"... heard of them.. some kind of.. living machine?" "... certainly looked
powerful enough, but.." ... ... betrayed once, why not again?.." ...

After several minutes of what was probably rather one-sided debate, Signas was
summoned back, looking somewhat hopeful. "We have decided.. to decline your
offer." With only a barely-noticable touch of contempt, he continued. "While
a.. capable leader would be a nice thing to have, we have no need for you. Thank
you and good-day." Signas's jaw dropped. ""You may go."

Once back outside, and a reasonable distance from the library, Signas's cool
facade of diplomacy vanished. He slammed his fist into the convenient brick wall
of the city. "Damn." He sighed. "Now what? There's nothing else for me in
this city, but it's miles to anywhere else." After a while standing and
thinking, he laughed, mostly at himself for not realizing something so simple.
"What good is a general without an army!? Nobody wants me if they have no
proof of my ability, of course." Signas punched his palm decisively. "I need
to find people with something to fight, is what I need to do...

.. but where?"
